All Terrain Vehicle
Insurance
With all terrain vehicle insurance in place, you, your friends, and loved ones can ride in the great outdoors without any worry of having to pay catastrophic bills out of pocket.
Adventure starts here
There’s nothing quite like hopping on your ATV, leaving the pavement behind and seeing where the trail takes you. Whether you're exploring backroads, working around the property, heading to the cottage or just out for some weekend fun, an ATV opens the door to plenty of adventure. Just make sure your insurance is along for the ride.
ATV insurance can protect you against the unexpected, including liability claims, accidents, theft, fire and damage to your machine. You may also have options for coverage on accessories, modifications and other equipment. Because when you've invested in a good ATV, the last thing you want is to find out your insurance doesn't keep up with it.
At HMS Insurance, we'll help you find coverage that fits the way you actually use your ATV. Whether you're a weekend trail rider, a property owner who uses an ATV for work, or someone who simply enjoys getting off the beaten path, we'll explain your options, shop the market and help build the right policy for you.
You bring the adventure. We'll help protect the ride.
What does All Terrain Vehicle (ATV) coverage include?
Similar to vehicle insurance, here are the basic mandatory ATV coverages:
Third party liability
Covers injuries, property damage and legal fees if you’re at fault for an accident. Think of it as your financial safety net when your ATV adventure doesn't go quite according to plan.
Accident benefits
Accidents can happen, even to experienced riders. AB can help provide coverage for things like medical expenses, rehabilitation and income replacement following an insured accident
Direct compensation
If another insured snowmobile driver is responsible for damaging your sled, DCPD may help cover the damage to your ATV, subject to the policy and Ontario's rules.
Uninsured auto
Not everyone on the trails has insurance. If you're involved in an accident with an uninsured vehicle or ATV, this coverage can help provide protection when the other driver can't.
More options available
It’s a good idea to get more than the minimum coverage for your ATV:
Collision coverage
Helps cover damage to your ATV when you collide with another vehicle or object, or when your ATV rolls over. Whether you misjudge a corner, meet a tree a little too closely, or have an unfortunate encounter on the trail, collision coverage helps get your ATV back in the game.
Increased limits
You may have the option to increase your liability limit (we recommend $2M) and certain Accident Benefits limits for additional protection.
Comprehensive
Covers many types of damage that don't involve a collision, such as theft, fire, vandalism, falling objects or certain weather-related losses. Because sometimes your ATV can have a bad day even when you aren't riding it.
Frequently asked questions about ATV insurance
-
Where you can legally operate an ATV depends on the type of road or trail, local rules and applicable Ontario requirements. Insurance doesn't automatically make an otherwise-illegal use legal, so make sure you're following the rules wherever you're riding.
-
Your ATV policy can provide coverage while you're using the vehicle on private property, subject to the policy terms. It's important to tell your broker how you actually use your ATV, particularly if you ride on your own property, a farm, cottage property or someone else's land.
-
Your policy may provide coverage when someone else operates your ATV, but there can be conditions and restrictions. Make sure the person riding it is legally permitted to operate an ATV and follows the applicable rules. If you regularly lend your ATV to family or friends, it's worth discussing with your broker.
-
It depends on the policy. Upgrades such as winches, plows, custom wheels and tires, suspension upgrades, storage boxes and other aftermarket equipment may have specific coverage limits. Tell your broker about significant modifications so you know what's actually protected.
-
Depending on the coverage you carry, your policy may help pay for damage to your ATV and provide liability protection if you injure someone or damage their property. If there's an accident, report it promptly to your insurer or broker, especially when there are injuries or significant damage.
-
Yes. If you're operating an ATV where insurance is required, you need to carry the appropriate coverage. Even if your ATV spends most of its time on private property, insurance can still be important to protect your machine and your wallet.
-
It can. Comprehensive coverage can protect your ATV against theft, fire, vandalism and other losses. If your ATV is stored at home, at a cottage, in a garage or somewhere else, let your broker know so the policy is set up correctly.
