RV and Trailer Insurance

Take home on the road
Whether you're cruising across the country in a motorhome, pulling the family trailer to the lake, or spending the weekend at your favorite campground, recreational vehicles are all about freedom, adventure and getting away from the everyday. The last thing you want is an unexpected accident, theft or damage putting the brakes on your plans.
Motorhome and trailer insurance can provide protection for your vehicle, trailer, contents and liability, depending on the policy you choose. Coverage can help with things like collision, comprehensive losses, theft, fire and damage caused to others. And because your RV often carries much more than just wheels and an engine, there may also be options to protect personal belongings, equipment, accessories and other additions.
At HMS Insurance, we understand that not every motorhome or trailer is used the same way. Maybe you're a full-time road warrior, a seasonal camper, a cottage regular or someone who escapes for a few weekends each summer. We'll take the time to understand how you use your RV and help find coverage that fits your lifestyle, without unnecessary extras.
You bring the snacks. We'll help with the insurance.
Motorhome: what type of insurance do you need?
An RV that you drive needs to be insured separately like a car, and will have the same required coverages, and optional coverages:
Third party liability
If you’re responsible for an accident that injures someone or damages their property, liability coverage helps protect you against the resulting claim. It’s an important safety net when your home-on-wheels meets the unexpected.
Collision coverage
Helps cover damage to your ATV when you collide with another vehicle or object, or when your ATV rolls over. Whether you misjudge a corner, meet a tree a little too closely, or have an unfortunate encounter on the trail, collision coverage helps get your ATV back in the game.
Accident benefits
For injuries, Accident Benefits can help with eligible expenses such as medical and rehabilitation costs, attendant care and income replacement. Because the road trip should be memorable for the right reasons.
Motorhome contents
Generally, contents are included in coverage packages, but the limits and available options will vary between insurers. Your HMS Insurance broker will review the options with you.
Direct compensation
If another insured driver is responsible for damaging your motorhome in an accident, DCPD may cover the damage to your vehicle, subject to the policy and Ontario’s rules.
Comprehensive
Covers many types of damage that don't involve a collision, such as theft, fire, vandalism, falling objects or certain weather-related losses. Because sometimes your ATV can have a bad day even when you aren't riding it.
Uninsured auto
If you’re injured in an accident caused by an uninsured driver, this coverage can provide protection when the at-fault driver doesn’t have insurance to respond to your claim.
Trailer insurance is different
Unlike a motorhome, a camping trailer doesn’t have its own engine, so it isn’t insured in quite the same way as a motorized vehicle. Coverage is generally focused on the trailer itself, its contents and your liability while using it. Your tow vehicle’s auto policy provides the required road coverage while towing (limitations apply), while the trailer policy protects the trailer when it’s parked at the campground, cottage or driveway.
If your trailer stays permanently or primarily at a seasonal campground, different coverage considerations may apply. Where it sits, how often it moves and how you use it can make a big difference in how it should be insured. There are standalone policies available, and/or the trailer can be insured on a property policy.

Frequently asked questions about trailer insurance
-
Coverage can extend while you're travelling, including trips outside Ontario, but the exact territory and coverage depend on your policy. If you're planning an extended trip or travelling outside Canada, talk to your broker before you hit the road.
-
Coverage can apply while your trailer is parked or stored, but the protection depends on the coverages you carry. Theft, fire, weather and other risks can still happen while your trailer is sitting at home, at a storage facility or at the cottage.
-
Motorhomes are designed for recreational use, but using one as a primary or long-term residence can affect how it needs to be insured. If you're living in your motorhome for an extended period, let your broker know before purchasing coverage so the policy reflects how you're actually using it.
-
No. Unlike vehicle insurance, which is a requirement in Ontario, trailers are not required to have insurance. When a trailer is towed, the liability from the towing vehicle is extended to the trailer. However, physical damage coverage like collision, fire and theft would not be included, unless you list the trailer on your policy and purchase the appropriate coverages.
-
Coverage for personal belongings can vary depending on the policy. Items such as clothing, electronics, camping equipment and other personal property may have specific limits. If you travel with valuable belongings, discuss them with your broker to make sure you have appropriate coverage.
-
Roadside assistance and emergency services may be available as optional coverage, depending on the insurer. This can be especially useful for motorhome owners travelling long distances, where a breakdown can be more complicated than simply getting a car towed.
-
Your broker will typically need details such as the trailer's make, model, year, length, value, type and how you use it. Where you store it and what you use it for can also affect the coverage you need. If you've added significant equipment or modifications, be sure to mention those as well.
